You Need More Sleep: #6 Unexpected Signs

If we all had a perfect life, we would be getting 8 hours of sleep every day, wake up happy and well rested – ready to take on the world with enough enthusiasm as a cheesy pop song. Unfortunately, adult life gets in the way whether its college, work, family, or just getting over that Netflix binge- we are often missing out on a good night’s sleep. While yawning, and feeling lethargic are considered “sleep signs”, there are other unforeseen ciphers that actually tell us we need to hit the sack soon.

  1. HUNGER PANGS

Lack of sleep makes you feel exhausted ( no kidding?) and also makes you feel super hungry. If you don’t get enough rest, your body begins to produce more ghrelin ( aka- the hunger hormone) and makes you crave unhealthy fatty food. While you keep snaking on the pizzas and cakes, your body will produce less leptin( a hormone that tells your body that you’ve had enough to eat) and lead to overeating ( gasp)

  1. WEIGHT GAIN

Point number 1 will lead to heavy weight gain. Not having proper sleep or rest will mess your metabolism and contribute to piling on the pounds. ( double gasp)

  1. FALLING SICK OFTEN

Getting enough sleep lets your body restore and repair itself. So when you don’t get enough sleep, your immune system gets weaker too. With a weak immune system you are not going to be able to fight illness, and thus resulting in falling ill frequently.

  1. CAN’T KEEP UP WITH THE DEADLINES

A huge oops on this one, especially if you work with thriving deadlines. Research believes that cognitive abilities are most likely severed by the lack of sleep. This affects the ability to make a simple decision, memorize details, solve problems and time management.

  1. SKIN PROBLEMS

You can blame your monstrous pimples on this too. If you are not getting enough sleep, your body will produce more of cortisol ( the stress hormone) which can intensify skin conditions such as psoriasis or acne.

  1. YOUR EMOTIONS ARE LIKE A MESSY KOTTHU

You are most likely to act out of impulse when you are sleep deprived. This could lead to a lot of unwanted drama or annoyance to those around you. If you find yourself snapping at everyone over something simple, it’s time to get some shut-eye- fast.
